Throne of Phones, an installation of phone waste from Atea
Old cables, chargers, mobiles, computers. It all piles up. Especially as the demand for more devices and electronics grows. According to the United Nations, e-waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams globally. Wherever we can, we want to reduce our own environmental footprint and recognize the crucial role IT plays in shaping a greener and more environmentally conscious future.
Since 2018, the IT team at Electrolux Group has put sustainability at the forefront and we’ve been driving down e-waste ever since. During 2023 alone, we signed local agreements in 23 countries for unwanted IT equipment. In the same year, we had 15 collections at our sites in eight countries, and with the help of dedicated employees we received approximately 3,290 pieces of unwanted IT equipment. This included laptops (1119), hard drives (1207) and servers (112), plus monitors, projectors, keyboards and more.
In total, 11,626kg of equipment was then reused, repaired or recycled and diverted from becoming e-waste sent to landfill or incineration. All contributing to the circular economy.
Meanwhile, since 2019 our data centers have been powered 100% by renewable electricity.
In early 2024, we were recognized for our efforts, picking up a Governance Impact Award from SustainableIT.org European Impact Awards. The awards celebrate leadership and achievement in driving environmental, social or governance sustainability within the field of IT and tech.
